Dan Egan (Ski Press) What a day for the Canadian Men’s Speed Team at the second day of racing at the Bombardier Winterstart at Lake Louise, as Manny Osborne Paradis takes top honors bringing the home town crowd to its feet! Austria grabbed 2nd and 3rd place with Benni Raich and Michael Walchhofer respectively.
But the Canadians could not be stopped today with Erik Guay in 4th place and new comer Robbie Dixon in 5th. With three Canadians in the top five it is clear that this is one team with lots of momentum moving into the 2009/2010 World Cup Season. Racing conditions were near perfect today with wind increasing through out the day, the track was a bit inconsistent as the narrow water inject portion of this race course was narrow and the winding nature of the Super G caused some of the gates to be set in softer snow adding to the overall challenge of the day. A big question is where are the Americans? Ted Ligety was the top US finisher today with a respectful 8th, but Bode didn’t crack the top 20! The brightest news of the weekend was the consistent skiing of Andrew Weibrecht who finished a strong 12th in both the Downhill and the Super G. It was a bitter sweet day in the end for the Canadians as amongst the celebration on Manny’s win; the teams mind was on current World Downhill Champion John Kucera who slid off the track today into the netting and was airlifted out to the hospital. With just ten weeks to the Olympic Games in Vancouver this was a disappointing event as reports of a broken lower left leg sweep through the crowd. The men move on to Beaver Creek and the Bird’s of Prey Downhill this week! |
