Lake Placid (Ski Press)-The greatest alpine skiers in the country are set to return to the Olympic venue of Whiteface/Lake Placid March 20-23 as the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) and Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) announced Whiteface as host of the 2010 U.S. Alpine Championships.

Located in nearby Wilmington, the 1980 Olympic alpine venue will feature athletes fresh from the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver including two-time World Cup overall champion and double World Championships gold medalist Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) and 2006 Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety (Park City, UT).

"On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, there is no better way to celebrate than by hosting the 2010 U.S. Alpine National Championships. Our nation’s top skiers will compete on Whiteface – the Olympic Mountain," said Governor David Paterson. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, we are honored to be hosting this event, which is a wonderful way to welcome home our Olympians and keep the legacy of the Whiteface and Lake Placid alive."

"This is another tribute to the venue and staff we have at Whiteface. The activity generated from these national championships will again solidify our role in the winter sporting world," said ORDA Chairman Joe Martens. "I thank the volunteers that help to make competition like this possible."

"They've done a lot of work on the hill the last couple years and I think they're equipped to put on a great event. They had an awesome U.S. Champs the last time it was there with a huge turnout," said hometown hero Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, NY) "People up there get excited. On a personal level, I am psyched to be able to compete at home. I think it has the potential to be a really great competition."

Whiteface has been home to the NorAm Finals the past two seasons and successfully hosted the 2003 U.S. Alpine Championships.

  1. Who is Ed Stansen? whats his background? certainly NOT Alpine Skiing.
Hey Ed, knowledge is power and you have none when it comes to Alpine skiing.
Educate yourself before making ridicules comments it doesn't make you look good.
  2. Ed is an absolute f-ing idiot. I am a Westerner, but these comments are absurd.
  3. This clown (Ed) obviously knows nothing about ski racing. The exact opposite is true. Most world cup events occur on rock hard surfaces, not what you see out west...they have to work hard to approximate WC conditions. Bode is from NH and Lindsey is from Mn. Hmmm.

Euro-WC dominance is a function of the skiing population. If our best athletes skied instead of playing football and basketball, etc, it would be no contest.

    What a moron.
  4. I think its great! The east is a perfect place for an event, and is home to many of the men and woman on our US SKI TEAM. Lindsay Vonn's Husband grew up at Whiteface, and Andrew Weibrech. I agree this is a perfect way also to celebrate the 30's anniversary of the 1980 winter games. Whiteface is a true hardcore mountain thank you very much! Just like most of the others in the east. Like they say the best Racers come from the east. If you go out west the racers prepare by spraying down the snow with a little water to make it icy, so this will prepare them for everything.
  5. This is just plain dumb and a waste of $$. Eastern skiing can't compare to what is available in the Rockies and Sierras and the courses at Whiteface will do nothing to prepare our skiiers for the conditions they face in real races in Europe and elsewhere. The fiction that we need to take skiing in the East seriously must stop. No wonder our Alpine Team produces only the occasional star and a bunch of mediocrities who "are happy with their results" when they finish in the 20's 30's and 40's. It is because they train and race at places like Whiteface, instead of areas that approximate World Cup terrain. The last Winter Olympics held at Lake Placid demonstrated the inferiority of Whiteface's Alpine venues.
