Men's Ski Team on Ice
Park City, Utah (Ski Press)-The men's U.S. Alpine Ski Team wrapped up a week of team bonding in Park City on Monday. The team's days in Utah consisted of hockey practice morning and night to prepare the athletes for the second annual "Hunt Cup" hockey game. The men also had the honor of spending time with some young patients at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City the morning before their big game. "The camp was super exciting. It's always fun to get all the boys out here," said Olympian Steve Nyman (Provo, UT). "It's a great situation because we're all putting forth the effort to come to the camp. We had a good crew this year." The Team had five days of morning and afternoon intensive ice sessions to prepare for the endgame, but, according to Head Coach Sasha Rearick, the lessons they learned at the rink have helped build the strength and teamwork among the men. "I think the week reset the standards of what hard work is. I think it recalibrated the guys in terms of what it takes in effort and time and the attention to detail," Rearick said. "The hockey camp was, in many ways, great bonding for coaches and staff. I think it in terms of really learning the game, and learning how to support each other as a team, that's what we came away with this year." The morning before the Hunt Cup, the Team traveled to Salt Lake City's Primary Children's Hospital where they spent time doing arts and crafts with a few of the hospital's patients. "It was cool to see the kids and be able to make buttons with them. To see the smiles on their faces was really fun," said Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety. "I think it was meaningful. It's tough to go down there and only spend an hour and a half. It would be cool to spend more time in a one on one situation, but it was still a good thing." Rounding off the trip was the Hunt Cup, named after Alpine Program Director Jesse Hunt. The hockey game, which is only in its second season of play, consists of the men's alpine team and coaches divided into two teams that play each other in a regulation length hockey game. At the end of the third period this year, there was a black eye, some bruised egos, and some smiling faces as the black team took home the trophy. "It was definitely aggressive," said Cody Marshall (Pittsfield, VT), who had to stop playing early thanks to an elbow to the eye from Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA). "But the guys were getting after it and it ended up being a lot of fun." Ligety, who opted to play in shorts sans any stockings, capitalized on his ability to skate straight, but said he couldn't do much more. "I haven't played since last year so I'm really good in straight lines, but other than that, once I have the puck I can't do anything," said Ligety, who added that he played in shorts because, " I like to keep my legs cool - you know, air them out. I don't wear the tall socks." The week wrapped after the game, and the Team will reunite in early August for their Southern Hemisphere camps.
