With five months to go before the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the Canadian snowboardcross team opened the 2010 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup on a high note on Saturday as Maëlle Ricker of Squamish, BC won the gold medal...

, followed by Dominique Maltais of Petite-Rivière Saint-François, QC, capturing the bronze medal in Chapelco, Argentina.

“I am very excited because I felt flat this summer in training but came to Argentina with a clear mind and I think it helped...I felt really good on top of my board. I came to Argentina with a clean slate and I was ready to go,” said Ricker.

“The course played well to my strengths. There was a quick start section and allowed me to control the heats right through to the final. I had good starts and clean runs in front of the other girls all day... I didn't have to deal with traffic and it allowed me to ride in front,” continued Ricker.

Ricker, who posted the third fastest time in qualification yesterday, benefited from great start position and clean starts to take the lead and charge all the way to the gold medal.

This result by Ricker, 30 years old, marks her second consecutive victory as she took the gold to end the previous season. Ricker has cracked the Top 5 in World Cup action for the ninth consecutive race.

“I am very satisfied with my riding and extremely grateful for all the support I received from our team that helped me reach the top of the podium. This was a huge confidence boost on the way to 2010,” added Ricker.
